Made to Crave Post #2- Chap. 1-4: Setting Goals

This past Wednesday I was teaching my group of preschoolers at church. We were talking about a church that meets in a backyard, and I presented the question, "What is something that this church does that is the same as our church?" One of my little darlings spoke up and said, "They eat!"

While the answer was cute at the time, it made me think about how accepting the body of Christ, the church, is of the sin of gluttony. We even invite it. How did we get to this point as Christians? I don't want to go off on a rant, but this doesn't make sense to me. I'm just going to leave it at that. It doesn't make sense.

God's Word has plenty to say about how we should treat our bodies, and I am having to learn to apply those Scriptures when I face tempting situations. And believe me, I have faced many since writing my last made to crave post. And I have failed many times as well.

What I am learning through the book Made to Crave is to rely on God to get me out of those tempting situations. One prayer I am learning to pray comes from Psalm 5:1-3. It says, " Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

I have to remember that this is a battle that I can't fight on my own, and I have to daily, sometimes HOURLY lay my requests before God.

Another helpful Scripture comes from 1 Corinthians 10:23, which says, " 'Everything is permissible'- but not everything is beneficial."

I can eat that chocolate chip cookie or drink that Dr. Pepper, but is it going to benefit me?

Get a Plan and an Accountability Partner

This, I believe, is crucial to any healthy eating journey. And I have failed in the past for not doing these 2 things.

So, I will be setting goals for each week. Some may change others will stay the same. The following goals are for the week of June 10-16. That's Monday - Sunday. We will be having Vacation Bible School at church during that time so I know I will be faced with a lot of tempting goodies.

Goals:

1. Drink only water.

2. Exercise at least 10 minutes each day.

3.  No sugary desserts- fruit or sugar free only.

4. Most important- Pray, pray, pray!!

*As for accountability- I have asked a friend to ask me about me eating and exercise habits. I also view my readers here as a form of accountability. I do NOT want to come back next week and have to tell you that I have failed in meeting my goals.

One other thing that has impacted me as I'm re-reading this book, is "shallow desires produce only shallow efforts." ( p. 16 Made to Crave). This has to be about me wanting to please God and bring glory to Him. NOT about me wanting to look good and fit into a pair of skinny jeans!

I would love to hear from you. Leave a comment and tell me what your goals are to stay healthy (or get healthy). What is your favorite Scripture to recite when facing temptation?

Made to Crave Post #1- Journey to a Healthier Me

I have been putting this post off for quite awhile now. I actually wanted to start off with this one, but then I just didn't feel like I was ready. Made to Crave is a book/Bible study on dealing with your food issues. Who really likes to broadcast their issues with food and weight for anyone to read? Well, I guess I am going there. I felt God telling me it's time. So here we go.

Last year I led a group of women in this Bible Study in hopes of becoming healthier. Losing some much needed poundage. Sadly to say that has not happened. In fact I have gained weight since that time.

This was supposed to be a study that taught me to crave God more than I crave food. So what did I miss?

That is what I aim to find out over the course of the next few weeks as I am re-reading this book.

If you would like to join me on this journey, I would love to have you do this with me. Or if you have done this study before, I would love to hear what you have learned and what keeps you motivated.
